As he awaits his turn, this pétanque player’s thoughts are not on the dappled afternoon sunlight in this corner of the Luxembourg Gardens, but on how he’s going to loft his next ball so as to send one of his opponent’s balls skittering to the back wall. I like to walk over to this court and linger for a few minutes (or a few hours) watching the experts play the game as it’s meant to be played.
